Combined, this information can  create a kind of fingerprint \u2014 a signature that could be used<br \/>\nto identify you  and your computer.<br \/>\nSome <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Device_fingerprint\">companies are already  using technology to try to identify individual computers<\/a>.<br \/>\nBut how effective  would this kind of online tracking be?<\/p>\n<p><strong>EFF <\/strong>is running an experiment to find out. <strong><!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/panopticlick.eff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/panopticlick.eff.org\/resources\/images\/panopticlick-logo.gif\" alt=\"http:\/\/panopticlick.eff.org\/resources\/images\/panopticlick-logo.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Panopticlick <\/strong>will anonymously log  the configuration and version information from your operating system,<br \/>\nyour  browser, and your plug-ins, and compare it to our database of many other  Internet users&#8217; configurations.<br \/>\nThen, it will give you a uniqueness score \u2014  letting you see how easily identifiable you might be as you surf the<br \/>\nweb.<\/p>\n<p>Adding your information to our database will help <strong>EFF <\/strong>evaluate the  capabilities of Internet tracking and<br \/>\nadvertising companies, who are in the  business of finding as many ways as possible to record your online<br \/>\nactivities.  They develop these methods in secret, and don&#8217;t always tell the world what  they&#8217;ve found.<br \/>\nBut this experiment should give us more insight into the future  of online tracking, and what web users<br \/>\ncan do to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>I just ran the test on myself, and my browser is unique amongst the <strong>1,231,863<\/strong> browsers tested so far.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s my browser plugin details, no one  else has the exact configuration I do.<\/p>\n<p>My list of system fonts is  almost unique and my privacy is in danger again&#8230;like always&#8230; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Unique &#8211; How track-able, is your browser Traditionally, people assume they can prevent a website from identifying them by disabling cookies on their web browser.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this is not the whole story.
