In this example, we know that\u00a0<b>Disk 1<\/b>\u00a0is our removable USB thumb drive because its size is listed as\u00a0<b>14 GB, make sure you select the correct disk, otherwise you can lose your data in other drives.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Select your removable disk with the\u00a0<b>select disk<\/b>\u00a0command. In this example, we want to work with disk 1, so the command is<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">select disk 1<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.252.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1104\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.252.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"55\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.252.jpg 352w, https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.252-300x47.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To clear the read-only attribute (making the disk writable), use the command<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">attributes disk clear readonly<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.253.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1105\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.253.jpg 401w, https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.253-300x45.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThen type command<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">clean<\/pre>\n<p>That should do the trick, now exit and now you can use your usb again, you can try that with other types, like SSD, External drives etc.<\/p>\n<p>*Also you can write protect your drives like this, for locking USB drives in future, you need to change the command, like this:<br \/>\n<code>attributes disk set readonly<\/code><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now back to real topic<\/strong> if the above steps didn&#8217;t work for you like in my case, then you need to create partition and format the drive (formatting is optional), as you can do it from GUI too.<\/p>\n<p>For creating partition, you need to repeat the above steps and use the command<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">create partition primary<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.254.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1106\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"62\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.254.jpg 465w, https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.254-300x40.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then select the partition by<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">select partition 1<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.255.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1107\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.255.jpg 399w, https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.255-300x46.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and format it like<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush:bash\">format FS=NTFS label=WC-Drive quick<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.256.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1108\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.256.jpg 407w, https:\/\/blogs.silicontechnix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/screenshot.256-300x45.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHere we are formatting with NTFS file system, you can change it to FAT and VFAT if you want.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it, you can now exit and you can see the USB in Windows Explorer, use it again like before \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy &amp;\u00a0Take care<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some days ago I was working with some Linux distribution and used my 16GB USB drive for installation, so after playing with the Linux image, I tried to remove Linux from USB and tried formatting the USB but Windows start giving me errors, that USB is &#8220;read only&#8221;
